Jesus Visits His Friends

After Jesus came back to life, He visited His friends, the disciples, who were hiding because they were afraid. The doors were locked, but Jesus suddenly appeared!

Jesus Brings Peace

Jesus said, “Peace be with you.” His friends were happy to see Him! Jesus showed them His hands and side with the marks from the cross, so they would believe it was really Him.

Jesus Gives the Holy Spirit

Jesus breathed on His friends and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” This Spirit would give them the power to share God’s love and forgiveness with others.

Jesus’ Special Friend, Thomas

One of Jesus’ friends, Thomas, was not there that day. When the others told him they saw Jesus, he didn’t believe it. Thomas said he needed to see and touch Jesus’ marks to believe.

Jesus Shows Thomas the Truth

Later, Jesus came again and asked Thomas to touch His marks. Thomas believed and said, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said that people who believe without seeing are blessed.

Jesus Does Many Miracles

Jesus did so many wonderful things that were not written down, but we can read and learn from the stories that were. These stories help us believe in Jesus, love Him, and have life in His name. to his friends and proves that he has defeated death and returned to life.

Prayer Table
Symbols

GOSPEL

To create a prayer table with symbols that resonate with the themes in John 20:19-31, consider incorporating the following items:

  1. Dove – The dove symbolizes peace, purity, and the Holy Spirit. In John 20:19-31, Jesus appears to his disciples and shares a message of peace, saying, “Peace be with you.” The dove serves as a reminder of the peace that Jesus brings and the presence of the Holy Spirit, which he promises to send to them.
  2. Key – The key symbolizes the authority given to the disciples by Jesus. In this passage, Jesus breathes on the disciples and says, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.” This represents the power of the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, given to Peter and the apostles, symbolizing their authority to guide the Church.
  3. Lamb – The lamb symbolizes Jesus Christ, the “Lamb of God,” who sacrificed himself for humanity’s redemption. In this reading, Jesus shows his disciples his wounds, emphasizing his sacrifice on the cross and his role as the Lamb who takes away the sins of the world.
  4. Empty Tomb – The empty tomb represents Jesus’ resurrection and victory over death. In the context of John 20:19-31, the disciples are witnesses to the risen Christ, who overcame death, giving hope to all believers.

These symbols help children connect with the powerful message of Jesus’ resurrection and the transformative hope it brings to our lives. Encourage children to explore and discuss the symbols, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Easter story.

Ana

KID TALK—Hi friends, my name is Ana, and today I’m going to tell you about a special day called Divine Mercy Sunday. I love this day because it reminds us how much Jesus loves us and how He always wants to forgive us.

Divine Mercy Sunday happens one week after Easter, and we celebrate it this year on April 27th. On this day, we think about Jesus’ amazing love for all of us. You know, sometimes we make mistakes, or we’re not always kind to others, but Jesus wants us to know that He understands, and He is always ready to forgive us.

In the Gospel reading for this special Sunday, we hear about a time when Jesus visited His friends, the disciples, after He came back to life (John 20:19-31). Jesus said, "Peace be with you," to His friends. It's like Jesus is telling them, "Don't worry, I'm here, and everything will be okay!"

Jesus showed His friends His hands and side with the marks from the cross so they would know it was really Him. His friends were so happy to see Him alive! Then Jesus breathed on them and gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit. He told them that when they receive this gift, they can share God's love and forgiveness with others too.

You see, my friends, the Holy Spirit helps us do what is right, and He helps us to be more like Jesus. Just like Jesus forgave His friends for their mistakes, He also wants to forgive us for ours. That's the beautiful message of Divine Mercy Sunday!

One of Jesus' friends named Thomas wasn't there when Jesus visited the others. When they told him that they saw Jesus, Thomas didn't believe them. He said he needed to see and touch Jesus' marks to believe. Later, Jesus came again and asked Thomas to touch His marks. Thomas believed right away, and he called Jesus, "My Lord and my God!"

Jesus then said something very important: "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe." This means that even though we weren't there to see Jesus after He came back to life, we can still believe in Him. We can trust that He loves us and wants to forgive us.

Divine Mercy Sunday reminds us of this amazing gift of God's love and forgiveness. We can celebrate it by going to Mass with our family or doing something special at home to remember Jesus' love for us. I like to draw pictures of Jesus, showing Him as my best friend who is always ready to listen and help me.

We can also celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday by forgiving others, just like Jesus forgives us. It's not always easy, but we can try to be more like Jesus and show love to everyone, even those who might be difficult to get along with.

Divine Mercy Chaplet

One special way we can celebrate this Sunday is by praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet. It's a way to think about how much Jesus loves us. You can hold a rosary, but you don't have to.

First, kiss the crucifix, make the sign of the cross. While holding the crucifix in the palm of your hands, remember how much Jesus loves us and how He helped us by dying on the cross for our sins. When my mom showed me how to do this, I could almost feel the nail marks in my hands!

Now, let's go through the prayers and the fun motions we do for each one:

  • "Eternal Father": Put your hands together and bow your head.
  • "I offer you": Lift your hands to the sky, like you're giving a big hug to heaven.
  • "In atonement for our sins": Hold your beads, tap your chest, and bow your head.
  • "For the sake of His sorrowful passion": Reach to the sky, fold your hands, and bow your head.
  • "Holy God": Fold your hands, bow your head, raise your hands, hold your beads, tap your chest, and reach to the sky.

You can finish by singing a song called "Jesus, I Trust in You."

Have a great week!

The Risen Jesus appeared to his friends on the evening of Easter Sunday, but one of them wasn’t there, Thomas. Thomas struggled to believe that Jesus was alive and Jesus taught him something important. Greg helps us know that Jesus is also speaking to us through his words to Thomas. As always, we then join Jesus in prayer. Afterwards, we sing ‘I Could Sing of Your Love Forever’ with Angel.

ID Please!

Sermons 4 Kids

OBJECTS: Driver’s license or other photo ID card

Does anyone ever ask you for identification? It happens to me all the time. When I go into a store to buy something and I want to pay for it with a check, the cashier takes my check and then asks, “May I see your driver’s license please?” Why does the cashier need to see my driver’s license? The answer is quite simple. The cashier wants to see if I match the picture on the driver’s license. Am I really who I claim to be?

There may be other times when you will be asked for identification. You may need a picture ID to get a library card. You might even need a picture ID to sign up for youth soccer. Many schools are now requiring students and teachers to wear a picture ID at school. Almost every day we are asked to prove that we are who we say we are.

On the Sunday that Jesus rose from the grave, he appeared to a group of his disciples. One of the disciples, whose name was Thomas, was not with them. When the disciples told Thomas that they had seen Jesus and that he was alive, Thomas said, “I won’t believe it until I see it with my own eyes. I want to see the nail-prints in his hands and put my hand in the place where the spear was thrust into his side.”

Doubting Thomas

OBJECTS: None

Do you know what people today call Thomas? He was one of Jesus’ disciples but today people call him “Doubting Thomas.” On the first Easter day, the day God made Jesus alive again, the disciples got to see Jesus and talk with him. But Thomas had not been there that day. So when Thomas came back to the other disciples, they told him, “Jesus is alive again! We saw him.” How do you think the disciples said that? Did they have slow, sad voices: [use a slow, draggy voice]“Jesus is alive again. We saw him”? How do you think they sounded when they told Thomas? Who can say “Jesus is alive again. We saw him” like the disciples might have sounded. [let as many children as would like to demonstrate with excited voices].

What We Cannot See

Sermon Writer

OBJECTS: A Fragrant Rose

Can you think of things you can’t see, but you know them to be true? The first thing that may come to mind is the wind. We can’t see the wind, but we believe the wind is real because we can see it rustle through the grass, move the leaves on trees, and feel the breeze on our cheeks.

Think about the fragrance of a rose. That is something we cannot see, but when we put our nose into the flower and sniff we are certainly aware that the wonderful scent is real.

How about love? You can’t actually see love; you can only see the results of love. Think about the people who love you and what comes from their love. Your mom and dad care for you everyday and provide what you need so that you will be happy and safe. Love feels like a very real thing, doesn’t it, even though we can’t see it?
