A Cry for Justice

Psalm 22

The words of Psalm 22 have long been a source of comfort and solace for the African American community, resonating deeply with their collective experience of abandonment and suffering. The opening lines of the psalm, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” reflect the deep sense of abandonment and isolation felt by many African Americans throughout history. From the horrors of slavery to the injustices of segregation and systemic racism, the African American community has endured unimaginable suffering and persecution, often feeling abandoned by a God who seemed to turn a blind eye to their struggles.

The psalm goes on to describe the physical and emotional pain experienced by the speaker: “I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joints; my heart is like wax; it is melted within me.” These words resonate strongly with the African American experience of being dehumanized and oppressed, feeling as though their bones are being broken and their hearts are being melted by the weight of their suffering. The lynching of innocent black individuals during the era of slavery and Jim Crow laws was a common form of domestic terrorism used to instill fear in the black community. Police brutality targeting African Americans also continues to be a major concern today, with countless instances captured on camera sparking nationwide protests and calls for justice.

Furthermore, the psalmist describes being surrounded by enemies and being mocked and ridiculed: “All those who see me laugh me to scorn; they shoot out the lip, they shake the head.” This all too familiar experience of being mocked and ridiculed by those in power is one that has been endured by African Americans throughout history. From being called derogatory names to facing discrimination and violence, the African American community has faced constant persecution and ridicule. This mistreatment has left lasting scars on the collective psyche of the community, leading to a deep sense of mistrust towards those in positions of power. Racial slurs highlight the power dynamic between those in positions of privilege and those who are marginalized.

However, despite the feelings of abandonment and suffering that are expressed in the psalm, there is also a glimmer of hope. The speaker declares, “But you, O Lord, do not be far from me; O my Strength, hasten to help me!” This plea for God’s presence and strength in the midst of adversity has been a source of strength and resilience for the African American community. Despite feeling abandoned, there is a deep-seated belief that God is still present and will provide the strength needed to endure.
