Activities
Choose one of the following OUR SUNDAY VISITOR activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
- Talk about the challenges which your family faces at this time? How can you work together to overcome those challenges?
- Hold a family picnic this week as summer vacation draws to an end or as our society gets ready to return to the regular activities of early autumn. On the picnic, hold a race – like the one suggested in today’s second reading. Afterward, talk together about what it means to keep one’s eye on the goal in a race.
- Name the people in your extended family who do not share your faith. Give them a phone call, not to recruit them but to let them know you care about them very much.

Run with Endurance
OBJECTS: A picture of a power strip with a lot of cords running from it.
What do I have today? Right, a power strip. It has a charger for my phone and one for the kids’ kindles plugged into it…..I have a power strip like this under my desk at work, but here’s what it looks like…(show picture)…….right!!
I’m always getting my feet tangled up in all the cords! You know it’s funny though….as long as I keep my feet where they belong, I don’t get them tangled in the cords…it’s only when i don’t watch where I’m putting my feet that I get all tangled up……I know the cords are there and I think I’m avoiding them and then all of a sudden one of the cords will be wrapped around my foot! You know, in our Christian walk, sin can sorta be like those cords.
I read these Bible verses last week and they certainly are true of me!! “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2)

At the Present Time
OBJECTS: If the sky is visible from area of presentation, use it to illustrate the lesson.
Have you ever stretched out on the ground and looked at clouds? Clouds are very beautiful and sometimes they seem to be in shapes that are familiar to us. Perhaps a cloud may look like a face or a duck or a stack of pancakes. It is fun to give our imaginations freedom to see what we can discover. Looking at clouds seems to relax our bodies and our minds. We may daydream and think about things we could make, stories we could write, pictures we could draw, songs we could sing. This is all good. It helps us be more creative.
Weather forecasters also look at clouds. They study the weather and try to predict whether we will have rain on the day of a picnic or sunshine when we want to go swimming. Being able to predict the weather helps farmers know when to plant and harvest crops. Weather forecasts help us prepare for storms and give us an idea of what road conditions might be when we are planning a trip. All of these things are good things.
