Activities
Choose one of the following OUR SUNDAY VISITOR activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
- Invite someone to dinner who doesn’t get out very much or who is alone. Remind the family that anyone who comes to your home is your guest and is to be welcomed as Jesus would be welcomed.
- Talk about pride and humility with your family. Is it dangerous to exaggerate your own importance? Does anyone know someone who does that? Why do we sometimes try to appear to be what we are not? Why do we sometimes fail to recognize our own worth? Discuss what today’s Gospel teaches about pride and humility. Explain that true humility is knowing our own worth but also knowing the worth of others.
- Invite family members to create placemats and name cards for the dinner table using colored paper and markers. Have family members place their name cards on the table. Go around the table and write on the name cards the gifts and talents that each person has to give. Then discuss the virtue of humility. When we are humble, we recognize our special gifts and the gifts of others. Let each person read his or her name card before the family meal.
- Have a discussion about courtesy and manners to help your family focus on living in humility. Review table manners. Talk about how our manners show respect for the people with whom we eat. Expand the conversation to talk about courtesy. Why is courtesy important when people live or work together? What does rude behavior do to relationships between people? As an example, ask the children if they have ever cut in line or had someone cut in line in front of them. Talk about how they felt.

OBJECTS: A knock, knock joke book
This morning I have some balloons with me. A balloon is a simple toy, but it brings a lot of pleasure to people of all ages. There are so many things you can do with a balloon. You can use balloons for decorations at a party or you can bat them around in the air like a ball. If you have a long, skinny balloon, you can even make it into the shape of different animals. Yes, a balloon can bring a lot of happiness, but it can bring sadness and disappointment too. Haven’t you ever seen a small child cry when his balloon bursts?
