TRANSCRIPT ✨

In the Gospel, Jesus talks about blessings and woes. Blessings are like good things that happen to us when we do what God wants us to do. Woes are like warnings – they remind us what might happen if we don't make good choices.

So, let's look at the blessings first. Jesus says, "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God." This means that even if we don't have a lot of money or toys, we're still special to God, and we can find true happiness by living the way He wants us to.

Next, Jesus says, "Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied." This one's about how we can feel hungry for God, just like we get hungry for snacks. When we feel this way, God promises that He'll fill us up with His love.

Then, Jesus talks about how to be a good friend. He says, "Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh" and "Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man." Sometimes, being a good person might make others upset with us. But Jesus tells us not to worry, because we're doing the right thing and God is proud of us.

Finally, Jesus talks about sharing God's love. He says, "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven." When we share God's love with others, we're doing something really important, and it makes God and us both very happy!

Now let's look at the woes. Jesus says, "Woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort." This reminds us that having a lot of money or stuff doesn't always make us happy. What matters is how we treat others and how we live our lives.

Jesus also says, "Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry." This means that if we forget about God and only focus on having fun or getting things, we might feel like something's missing in our hearts.

Then, there's a part about being careful with how we treat others. Jesus says, "Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep" and "Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets." This tells us that it's important to be kind and honest with our friends, even if it's not the easiest thing to do.

So, let's try to remember these lessons from Jesus. When we do, we'll feel closer to God and be better friends to others!

Here are some Beatitudes just for us kids:

  • Blessed are the children who share their toys, for they will have many friends.
  • Blessed are the children who tell the truth, for they will be trusted.
  • Blessed are the children who are kind to others, for they will be loved.
  • Blessed are the children who listen and learn, for they will grow wise.
  • Blessed are the children who forgive, for they will know peace.

Thank you for listening! Let's try to live out these Beatitudes every day!

KEY INSIGHTS w/ QUESTIONS

Well-Watered Trees (Psalm 1; Jeremiah 17:5-10 )

Spiritual Growth

Q: How can I thrive and grow spiritually?
A: Stay closely connected to God by focusing on His love and law, not your own understanding, and read the Bible, pray, and ask for His help regularly.

Q: What does it mean to be like a tree planted by water?
A: It means being rooted in God's word, which provides all you need for growth and fruitfulness: sunshine (guidance), soil (foundation), nutrients (wisdom), and water (love).

Bearing Fruit

Q: How can I bear good fruit in my spiritual life?
A: Recognize that all power and strength come from God, stay connected to His strength, and you'll produce the fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Avoiding Spiritual Dryness

Q: What happens when I rely only on myself?
A: You become like a dry desert shrub, barren and unproductive, cut off from the world and unable to thrive or bear fruit.

Staying Connected

Q: How do I "soak up the good water" of God's love and strength?
A: Stay rooted in His word by reading the Bible, praying, recognizing your need for His help, and asking for it regularly.

Sharing God's Love

Q: How can I effectively share God's love with others?
A: By staying rooted in God's word and connected to His power, you'll be healthy, green, and lush, naturally bearing good fruit and sharing God's love through your actions and character.

In Search of Happiness

Sermons 4 Kids

OBJECTS: Bubbles for blowing; few dollars in cash; bag of chips; video game controller

GOSPEL: I am sure that everyone has experienced the joy of blowing bubbles. (Blow bubbles at the kids.) Isn’t it funny how something so simple can make so many people happy? It isn’t just for kids either! I have even seen teenagers and adults laughing and having fun blowing bubbles and trying to catch them.

There is just one problem with the happiness that comes from blowing bubbles — it doesn’t last! The minute you reach out and touch one of the bubbles, it will burst. (Blow bubbles and have kids try to touch them.) Many times we chase the bubble, but it is always just out of reach and as soon as it touches the ground, the bubble is gone.

Temporary Blindness

OBJECTS: Sun glasses.

GOSPEL: Have you ever come into the house after playing out in bright sunlight and everything looks black? It is as if you have lost your sight for a moment. This is called sun blindness. After your eyes have had time to adjust you are able to see objects in the room once again.

During that moment when everything is black, the chairs, pictures, carpets, tables are still there, you just can’t see them. (Words of caution: You should never stare directly at the sun. We can protect our eyes by wearing sun glasses.)

A similar thing may happen with our feelings. Perhaps you have felt sad and, for a time, you couldn’t see the good things in your life. The good things are still there, you just couldn’t see them because of your sadness.

In the Bible Jesus spoke to a great crowd of people. One of the things he said…

Crowds and Crowds and Crowds

OBJECTS: f you are not sure how many people your sanctuary holds, ask someone at your church who is sure. That number goes in where the “X” is in the first sentence..

GOSPEL: Have you ever been in a big crowd? I mean a really big crowd. We could get about X number of people into this sanctuary. Jesus sometimes had 4000 or 5000 people in the crowds that followed him! That’s a lot of people! I bet they caused traffic jams just from people walking this way and that way trying to get closer to Jesus.

One day there was a very big crowd of people all waiting for Jesus to come. When Jesus saw all the people, he knew what they wanted, and he was happy to give it to them. They wanted to hear his words about God–– and many of them were sick and wanted to get well.

Some people in the crowd had physical diseases––some had mental illnesses––some may have gotten hurt in accidents. Luke tells us that people were trying to touch him because they felt the power of his healing even by touching him!

Here’s a question for you: Do you think Jesus knew all these people? Huge crowds gathered wherever he went. Once the crowds, trying to get close, almost pushed him into the lake! Once so many crowded into his house that nobody…
