Discussion Questions
Luke 24:35-48
Discussion Questions:
1. How do you think the disciples felt when Jesus appeared to them after his resurrection? How would you react if you were in their shoes?
Sample answer: I think the disciples were probably shocked, amazed, and overjoyed when they saw Jesus after his resurrection. If I were in their shoes, I would probably feel a mix of disbelief and excitement, but ultimately be filled with joy and gratitude.
2. In what ways do you think Jesus’ appearance to the disciples helped strengthen their faith? Can you think of a time when your faith was strengthened by a similar experience?
Sample answer: Jesus’ appearance to the disciples must have greatly strengthened their faith by proving that he had truly risen from the dead, just as he had foretold. A similar experience that strengthened my faith was when I saw prayers answered in a way that only God could have orchestrated.
3. Jesus told the disciples to be witnesses of his resurrection. How can we be witnesses of Jesus in our daily lives, especially as teenagers?
Sample answer: We can be witnesses of Jesus in our daily lives by living out our faith authentically, showing love and kindness to others, and sharing the hope and joy we have in Christ with those around us, especially our peers.
4. How do you think the disciples’ understanding of the Scriptures was deepened after Jesus explained them? How can we deepen our own understanding of the Bible?
Sample answer: The disciples’ understanding of the Scriptures was deepened when Jesus explained them in the context of his life, death, and resurrection. We can deepen our own understanding of the Bible by studying it regularly, seeking guidance from trusted mentors, and asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom and revelation.
5. Discuss the significance of Jesus’ command to go and preach repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations. How can we actively participate in sharing this message with others, especially with our peers?
5. Sample answer: The command to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations is a call for us to share the good news of Jesus with everyone we encounter. We can actively participate in this mission by living out our faith boldly, sharing our testimonies, and inviting others to learn about Jesus.
6. Reflect on how Jesus showed his disciples his hands and feet as proof of his resurrection. How does this physical evidence help to strengthen our belief in the resurrection of Jesus?
6. Sample answer: Jesus showing his hands and feet to the disciples as proof of his resurrection provided undeniable physical evidence of his victory over death. This tangible proof strengthens our belief in the resurrection and assures us of the power of Jesus to overcome sin and death.
7. How can we apply the disciples’ response of joy and amazement to our own encounters with Jesus in our lives today? What can we learn from their reaction?
Sample answer: We can apply the disciples’ response of joy and amazement to our own encounters with Jesus by being filled with gratitude, awe, and excitement when we experience his presence and power in our lives. Their reaction teaches us to respond with faith, joy, and praise when we witness God’s work in our midst.

In the Gospel of Luke, the Risen Jesus appeared to two disciples traveling on the road to the village of Emmaus outside of Jerusalem (Luke 24:13-35).
A Summary of the Road to Emmaus Story
The two disciples were walking along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus and talking about the passion and death of their Lord Jesus Christ. Then the Risen Jesus himself walked up to the disciples, but they did not recognize him. The disciples told Jesus about all that had happened including the stories from the other disciples about the empty tomb. Jesus responded by calling them foolish for not understanding the Scriptures, which said the Messiah to suffer before entering into his glory. Jesus walked ahead of the disciples, but they asked him to stay. Then he broke bread with them and suddenly they recognized him. The Meaning of the Road to Emmaus Story This event has been such a great inspiration for Christians throughout history. Many people have drawn connections between Catholic celebration of the Mass, which features both the reading and explanation of the Scripture (Liturgy of the Word) and the breaking of bread (Liturgy of the Eucharist).
The disciples’ reflection on the events after Jesus disappears say much about how we are to encounter Christ today:
1. Scripture
“They said to each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?'” (Luke 24:32) Turn to the Scriptures with an open heart and let the Lord open them up to you.
2. Eucharist
“Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.” (Luke 24:35) If you want to know Jesus and encounter him today, celebrate the breaking of the bread with other Christians in church. Christ is present in the Eucharist.
