Two Kinds of Food

OBJECTS: Ice cream maker, if available. Serve ice cream to children if setting and situation permits.

Oh, it’s so good!

Have you ever made ice cream? It takes a lot of time and hard work to make ice cream, especially the old fashioned way. Here is a picture of an old fashioned ice cream maker. Cream, sugar, and vanilla are poured into the metal container. Other things may be added such as chocolate, strawberries, or peaches. Then ice and salt are packed around the outside of the ice cream container and the hard work begins. The crank must be rotated until the cream thickens and becomes ice cream. Usually people take turns working the crank. The last step is to pack more ice around the ice cream container, cover it with a towel and leave it for a while so it will freeze.

These days we mostly go to the store and buy ice cream, but either way, ice cream is a treat. The unfortunate thing about ice cream is that it doesn’t last very long. It must be eaten quickly, especially on a warm day. Sometimes we wish for more.

Filled with God’s Love

OBJECT:  Pita pockets and other types of bread.

Most of us eat some kind of bread almost everyday. All around the world people eat bread. White bread, brown bread, cinnamon bread, cornbread …

Bread comes in many forms. It can be shaped into biscuits, rolls, or bread sticks. Perhaps the most familiar shape is a loaf of bread. We slice the loaf and toast it for our breakfast or use it to make sandwiches.

Here is a type of bread that may not be as familiar to you. This is flat bread. When baked the layers of the bread rise and as it cools steam creates a space between the layers. When we cut this circle of flat bread across the center we see that a type of pocket is formed. We call these pieces of bread pita pockets.

Pita pockets have been made for hundreds and hundreds of years in many parts of the world. One great thing about pita pockets is that you can fill them with meat, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, tuna fish, eggs. All kinds of nutritious food can be held inside.
