Contemporary Paraphrase
ALCUIN: People knew that focusing on eternal life meant connecting with God’s work. So they asked Jesus, “What should we do to achieve this?”
BEDE: In other words, “Which rules should we follow to truly fulfill God’s law?”
CHRYSOSTOM: Even though Jesus knew some people might not take action, He answered for the benefit of others who would. He explained that believing in the One God sent is the real work.
THEOPHYLACT: Jesus didn’t say, “Believe Him,” but “Believe in Him.” Demons believed Him but didn’t believe in Him.
AUGUSTINE: Believing in Him means loving, honoring, and connecting with Him. Faith without love doesn’t work. True faith connects us to Christ. That’s the faith God wants from us.
AUGUSTINE: To eat the bread of eternal life, just believe in Him. No need to prepare or wait.
CHRYSOSTOM: People still wanted miracles to help them believe. They asked for signs like their ancestors received. They mentioned the manna miracle, saying that God gave their ancestors bread from heaven.Reply in a thread
CHRYSOSTOM: People remembered the manna miracle the most, because it involved food, and food is important to everyone. They didn’t credit Moses or God directly to avoid either elevating Jesus to God’s status or reducing Him to a mere prophet like Moses. Instead, they talked about what their ancestors received.
AUGUSTINE: It’s like they were saying, “Moses provided us with manna from heaven, which is more impressive than your earthly barley loaves. You promised us lasting food, but where is it?” Jesus explained that the manna was a symbol of something greater – Himself.
BEDE: He’s talking about giving life to people, not the physical world.
THEOPHYLACT: Jesus calls Himself the true bread because the manna was a symbol of Him. He is the Son of God and the Son of Man, a combination that’s hard to understand.
ALCUIN: He came down from heaven as a man, but He’s also God, and that’s how He gives life to people.
THEOPHYLACT: Like bread gives life to the body, Christ gives life to the soul.
CHRYSOSTOM: The people still didn’t understand and thought Jesus was talking about physical bread. They asked Him to give it to them, even though He had said it came from His Father.
AUGUSTINE: Just like the Samaritan woman who thought Jesus was talking about physical water, these people thought He meant physical bread. They wanted this everlasting bread so they would never be hungry again.

Gospel Exegesis
✨ Don’t work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you (v.27a)
Jesus is not saying that physical needs are unimportant. Elsewhere he speaks of food, drink, and clothing, assuring his listeners that “your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things,” and promising that, if they will seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness, “all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:32-33). Much of Jesus’ earthly ministry is focused on healing people’s physical ills. But now he calls the crowd to acknowledge their need for “food that endures for eternal life”—promising that the Son of Man will give them that food.
