Jesus Resists Temptation
Summary: In this story, Jesus is led into the desert by the Holy Spirit where He spends 40 days without food and faces three temptations from the devil. Jesus shows us how to resist temptation by trusting in God and doing what is right.
Jesus Fasts for 40 Days: Jesus goes without food for a long time but is still strong. He trusts God to take care of Him.
Temptation #1: The devil tells Jesus to turn a stone into bread to eat, but Jesus knows it’s more important to obey God’s plan than to focus on His own needs.
Temptation #2: The devil offers Jesus power over all the world if He worships him. Jesus loves and worships only God, so He refuses.
Temptation #3: The devil asks Jesus to show off His power by jumping from a high place and letting angels save Him. Jesus says He won’t test God.
The devil leaves: Because Jesus resists the temptations and stays true to God, the devil gives up and leaves.
Lessons for Kids:
Be Humble: Jesus didn’t show off His power but chose to stay close to God. This teaches us to be humble and to use our gifts wisely.
Trust in God: Jesus trusted God to provide for Him and protect Him, even when He faced difficulties. We should trust God too!
Obedience: Jesus obeyed God’s plan and said no to the devil’s temptations. We should follow Jesus’ example and try our best to do what is right.
Love and Worship God: Jesus shows us that we should always put God first in our lives and give Him all our love and worship.

Kid Talk

Hi friends! Today, we’re going to learn about the time Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, and how He showed us how to make the right choices. You know when you really, really want to do something you know isn’t good? That’s called temptation! My mom tells me that everyone faces temptations, but we can learn to support one another in choosing what is right.

Activities
Choose one of the following OUR SUNDAY VISITOR activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
Lent is a time of prayerful reflection. Discuss with your family a time during the week or day that all radios, stereos, televisions, computers, and telephones will be shut off so family members can pray. Call it the family’s prayer time. At the end of the week, ask family members to share what they have learned or gained from the experience.
Will your family be open to God’s presence during the Lenten season? The traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and giving alms, remind us that we need God. As a family, discuss how you can observe these Lenten practices.
While there is a tradition of “giving something up” for Lent, this year consider instead “doing something extra” for someone who could use help or assistance. That might include volunteering to take an elderly neighbor shopping or helping him or her with spring chores.
What Lenten observances does your parish have this year? How can you participate?

Resisting Temptation
Sermons 4 Kids
OBJECTS: A bowl of candy
There was a bowl of candy like this one sitting on the coffee table in the living room of Mary’s house. Mary’s mother noticed that she was looking at the candy and said, “Now, don’t you eat any candy until after dinner or you will spoil your appetite.” The candy looked so good and the temptation was so great. “Surely just one little piece won’t hurt — and mother will never know the difference,” Mary thought to herself.

Jesus is Tempted
Sermon Writer
OBJECTS: None
Does anyone know what it means to be “tempted”? [Thank each child for his/her answer].
Yes, tempted means to think about doing something that might not be right or good. If a class is having a spelling test, let’s say, and one of the children did not study the words and isn’t sure how to spell them, what might that child be tempted to do? [Accept all answers].
Have you ever been tempted? Sure, everyone has been tempted. I have been, many times. Let’s see how many in the congregation have been tempted [Ask for a show of hands].
There’s nothing wrong with being tempted. It’s only wrong when you choose to do the wrong thing. If we asked people to raise their hands again, we would see that all of us have done wrong things, probably many times.
Well, in today’s Scripture, the Holy Spirit––that’s another name for God––has sent Jesus out into the desert to think. Jesus needs to think about what he is going to do. He knows that he is special. He knows he has great power. But if he is loyal to God and tells people the truth, some people––some very important people––will be very angry with Jesus.

Food for the Soul
Sermon Writer
OBJECTS: A pyramid food chart or you might want to prepare a display of actual food, representing the various food groups.
Today I’ve brought along a food chart that teaches us about the foods our bodies need to be healthy. You can see, from looking at the chart, we need to eat many different kinds of food. Colorful foods are especially good for you.
At the top of the chart there is a small space for foods such as olive oil or butter. As we look down the chart we see spaces for foods such as milk and cheese, and a little meat and beans. Toward the bottom, the spaces on the chart become larger and are filled with lots of fruits and vegetables. The bottom section of the chart teaches the importance of eating grains found in cereal and bread.
When you are healthy you have lots of energy to play and do good work. Jesus reminds us that food is not the only thing that makes us healthy. He said, “Man shall not live by bread alone…” (4:4).
Food keeps our bodies healthy, but we also need to have a healthy spirit. What does this mean to you?
