Break down xxxxxxx into simple, accessible concepts for children to understand and grow in the Catholic faith.

GOSPEL

Introduction: Jesus teaches us important lessons about how to treat others and how to be a good person.

Be Careful About Judging Others: Jesus says we should not judge or criticize others. Instead, we should think about our own actions and try to improve ourselves. Imagine you have a tiny piece of dust in your eye and your friend has a big log in their eye. Before trying to help your friend, it’s better to get rid of the dust in your own eye first.

Be a Good Teacher and Example: Jesus tells us to be good teachers and examples for others. If you have learned something good, share it with others. You can be a good example by doing the right things and showing love to everyone.

Be Kind to Everyone: Jesus wants us to be kind and good to everyone, even if they aren’t kind to us. He tells us to love our enemies and do good things for them. He also wants us to share with others who need help, even if they can’t give us anything back.

Be Merciful and Forgiving: Jesus teaches us to be kind and forgiving, just like our loving God. God is good to everyone, even if they don’t always do good things. We should try to be like God, loving everyone and showing kindness and forgiveness.

Conclusion: Jesus teaches us important lessons about being good people, showing love, and being kind. By following his teachings, we can become more like him and grow in our faith.

BLOOMING IN THE LIGHT (7:00) – Do you know WHEN and HOW to genuflect at Mass? If not, or if you may need a review, here’s a quick video for you.

Kid Talk

Ana

Hey there friends! I love going to church with my family because I get to learn new stories from the Bible. This Sunday Jesus teaches us important lessons about how to treat other people and be good friends. I wanted to share this story with you so we can learn together and become better friends to everyone around us.

Jesus begins by telling us not to judge or criticize others. You know how sometimes we see someone not genuflecting before Jesus at church before entering the pew, and we quickly tell them, "You should genuflect!"? Well, Jesus wants us to think about our own actions first and try to be better ourselves. When I said that to my brother, my mom pointed out that I was so fixed on what my brother was doing, I didn't even realize that I didn't even genuflect myself!

Imagine your friend has a tiny piece of dust in their eye, and you have a big log in your eye. It would be hard for you to see clearly and help your friend get that dust out of their eye if you have a log in your own eye. So, it's better to first get rid of the log in your eye before helping your friend. In the same way, we should focus on being good and kind ourselves before pointing out others' mistakes.

Jesus also tells us to be good teachers and examples for our friends. Just like when you learn something cool in school and want to share it with your friends, you can share what you learn about God and Jesus too! You can be a good example by doing the right things, showing love to everyone, and helping your friends when they need it.

Another important lesson in this story is being kind to everyone. Jesus wants us to love and be good to everyone, even if they aren't always kind to us. He says that it's easy to be kind to people who are kind to us, but we should also love and be kind to people who aren't our friends. That's how we show God's love and make new friends.

Jesus also teaches us to be merciful and forgiving, just like our loving God. God loves and is kind to everyone, even when people don't always do the right things. If God can do that, then we can try our best to be like Him too!

In conclusion, this story from Luke 6:39-45 is really important because it helps us learn how to be good friends and show God's love to everyone. By following Jesus' teachings and focusing on being kind, loving, and forgiving, we can be better friends to everyone around us and grow in our faith. Remember, let's first look at our own actions before judging others, be good examples, and be kind to everyone, even if they aren't always kind to us. That's what Jesus wants us to do, and it will make us more like Him!

KEY INSIGHTS w/ QUESTIONS

Fruits of the Holy Spirit

Q: What are the Fruits of the Holy Spirit?
A: The Fruits of the Holy Spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness, and self-control, produced when we ask Jesus to fill us with His love and Holy Spirit.

Q: How does the video use the tree analogy to explain spiritual growth?
A: Each person is likened to a tree, with their fruit revealing their character: good trees bear healthy, delicious fruit, while bad trees produce sour or rotten fruit.

Spiritual Development

Q: How does one become a "good tree" according to the video?
A: A good tree bears good fruit by being fully trained by Jesus, becoming like Him and bearing the fruits of the Holy Spirit in one's life.

Q: What determines the quality of fruit a person produces?
A: The quality of fruit is determined by the treasure in one's heart: good people produce good fruit from their good heart treasure, while evil people produce bad fruit from their evil heart treasure.

Spiritual Identification

Q: How are people spiritually identified according to the video?
A: People are identified by the type of fruit they bear in their lives, just as trees are identified by their fruit: good trees bear good fruit, bad trees bear bad fruit.

Q: What is the result of being filled with the Holy Spirit?
A: When filled with the Holy Spirit, one becomes like a good tree bearing good fruit, allowing others to see Jesus shining through their life.

A Tree and Its Fruit

Sermons 4 Kids

OBJECTS: Several kinds of fruit such as apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, etc.

Do you like fruit? I have a basket filled with several different kinds of fruit with me today.

Here’s an apple. How many of you like apples? Apples not only taste good, but they are good for you. Surely you have heard the saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.”

How about bananas? There are lots of ways to eat bananas. They are great on cereal at breakfast, aren’t they? How about banana pudding? Is there anyone who doesn’t like banana pudding? Have you ever eaten banana bread? Yum, yum! One of my favorite snacks is a banana smoothie. Oh, did I mention that bananas have lots of vitamins?

Good Fruit

Sermon Writer

OBJECTS: Bring a bag of apples. Be sure to wash them first.

Jesus talks a lot about fruit. He says that he wants us—his followers—to bear fruit. Now I don’t see a banana sprouting from anyone’s ear. There isn’t anyone with an orange tree growing out of her head. What do you think Jesus means when he says we need to bear fruit for him? [Accept all answers].

Listen carefully while I read what Jesus said to us about fruit. [Read Luke 6:43a, 45a]. “A good tree does not bear bad fruit…. A good person brings good out of the treasure of good things in his heart.”

When Jesus says that good people produce good fruit, he doesn’t mean fruit like apples and cherries. Jesus means that if we are following him and trying to do the things that make God happy, we will do good things. We will help people, share what we have, and treat every person with respect.

What are some other good things that Jesus would like for us to do? To do those things we need help. We learn how to do good things by listening to Jesus.

The Real Thing

Sermon Writer

OBJECTS: Pictures of cartoon characters

Do you have a favorite cartoon character? Let’s make a list. Tell me if any of these characters are familiar to you.

Mickey Mouse
The Road Runner
Bugs Bunny
Cat in the Hat
Donald Duck
Curious George
Dora the Explorer
Charlie Brown
Magilla Gorilla
Scooby Doo
Spiderman
Winnie the Pooh
Yogi Bear
Woody Woodpecker
Batman
Porky Pig
Casper the Friendly Ghost
Eeyore
George of the Jungle
Pink Panther
Snoopy

(NOTE: To find pictures of these various characters, go to Google and search for them by name.)

What do all of these cartoon characters have in common? It is this: they entertain us and make us laugh, but not one of them is real. We all love Mickey Mouse, however he does not look like a real mouse or act as a real mouse would. Real ducks do not talk like Donald Duck. It is exciting to watch Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner chase each other, but we would never do the things they do. These are pretend characters that are imitations of the real thing.
