The Cross of Christ
Who is Jesus? What does He tell us to do? The conversation Jesus has with Peter in Mark chapter 8 can be a tough one to contemplate. Jesus asks His disciples who He is, and calls them to give up their own interests and follow Him. We don’t always understand what God is doing in our lives, but He loves us and wants us to trust Him and serve Him.These crafts recall the principles of the passage. A “Who is Jesus Poster” considers the character of Christ. A “Cross-word Puzzle” remembers God’s big picture plan. Let’s get crafty!

Beyond Ourselves
OBJECTS: Firefighter’s uniform or equipment, if available. This lesson could be enhanced by asking a firefighter in your congregation or community to come in uniform and assist the person presenting the children’s sermon.
Have you ever been so involved in something that you weren’t aware of time passing? It is as if you forget about yourself. You may have experienced that when you were playing and having so much fun you forgot about everything except what you were doing. Artists, writers, surgeons, and other people experience this when they are doing important work. They care so much about what they are doing and find so much joy in what they are doing that they forget about themselves.
Then there are firefighters who go into burning buildings to save people without thinking about themselves. Some volunteer firefighters don’t get paid for this dangerous work, yet they put their own needs aside in order to save people’s lives.

What You Choose to Do
OBJECTS: Ice Cream
Most kids really like ice cream. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could eat ice cream all the time – breakfast, lunch and dinner? Why wouldn’t that work?
Yes, because we wouldn’t have room to eat other healthy foods that our bodies need to grow strong. We can’t always have what we want.
We can’t always do what we want to do as well. You may wish to play with your friends rather than help with the dishes, make your bed, or take out the garbage. We do some tasks, we would rather not do, to be helpful to others.
We also need to give up certain things to be able to learn something new. (May involve the kids here by asking what new skill they would be interested in.) You don’t become a good soccer player, dancer, speller, runner, or singer without giving up some of your time to practice those skills.
We can say the same thing of being a Christian. Jesus tells us in the Bible that, “Whoever wants to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (8:34).

However, there is an area of town that is known as Green Street Park that is in need of improvement and care. Philip learns about how Saint Francis of Assisi loved God’s world and cared for it. His teacher, Sister
Mary Clare, challenges Philip to act as Saint Francis would. By reading this story, listeners can think about how they might respond if they found themselves in Philip’s shoes.
