GOSPEL
This passage is about Jesus entering Jerusalem on a young donkey, and it highlights important events and concepts that children can understand.
- Jesus’ Journey (Luke 19:28): Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, which is an important city in the Bible. He went there to teach people about God’s love.
- Getting the Donkey (Luke 19:29-34): Jesus told two of his friends to go and get a young donkey for him. He knew where the donkey was and that it had never been ridden before.
- Joyful Parade (Luke 19:35-38): As Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem, people were very happy to see him. They waved branches and put their coats on the road to welcome him, like having a big parade!
- Praising Jesus (Luke 19:36-38): The people praised God and said that Jesus was special. They believed he was sent by God to help them and teach them.
- Grumpy Leaders (Luke 19:39-40): Some leaders were not happy with the people praising Jesus. They asked Jesus to make the people stop, but he said even the rocks would sing if they didn’t!
These concepts help children understand Jesus’ journey and how people welcomed and praised him. It shows that some people didn’t believe in Jesus, but he knew that God was with him, and people were excited to see him and learn from him.

Blessed is the King!

KID TALK—Hi friends! My name is Ana, and today I want to tell you about a story from the Bible. This story is about Jesus and how he entered Jerusalem while people were celebrating him. It is found in the book of Luke, chapter 19, verses 28 to 40.
It all started when Jesus was walking toward Jerusalem. He told two of his friends to go get a donkey for him to ride into the city. This was like a king riding a special horse! When the people saw Jesus on the donkey, they began to shout, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” They waved palm branches and put their coats on the ground for the donkey to walk on. It was like a parade!

On Palm Sunday, we remember the time Jesus entered Jerusalem–and everybody started praising him! This was even prophesied many years before in Zechariah 9:9. You can read about Palm Sunday in Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44, and John 12:12-19.

The Story of Palm Sunday | Bible Stories for Kids

In the Luke 19:28-44 bible lesson for kids, Jesus and His disciples had been traveling through the land teaching, and as Passover drew near, they began to head toward Jerusalem. A crowd of people who had seen or heard of the works that Jesus had done were following them on their journey.

Activities
Choose one of the following OUR SUNDAY VISITOR activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
During Holy Week we remember and celebrate the depth of God’s love for us. Ask each member of the family to share how he or she can spread God’s love at home this week.
Display the new palm branches that each member of the family brings home from church in a prominent place where everyone can see them. The branches are a reminder of what Jesus did for us, his death and resurrection. Focus on welcoming Jesus as king in your home and in your hearts.
What can you do this Holy Week to help make it special for you and your family? How will you take time out as a family to celebrate the upcoming Triduum?
When you gather for dinner, light a candle and talk about the events in the last week of Jesus’ life. Divide the reading of the passion into segments and read one part each evening this week.

Praise Parade
Sermons 4 Kids
OBJECTS: Kazoos, pom poms, noisemakers, flags, drums, triangles, tambourines (anything that would be used to celebrate at a parade)
Do you know what we are going to do this morning? We are going to have a parade! (Start passing out music instruments as you continue.) I brought a lot of musical instruments, noise makers, and flags — enough for everyone. What should we call our parade? How about the Praise Parade? We are going to have a Praise Parade for Jesus! (When you have finished passing out all of the instruments, lead the children in a parade around the room, through the hallway and back again.) Here we go, follow me. (Lead kids in shouting, “Hosannah!” and “Glory in the highest!”)
Wow! That was exciting, wasn’t it? There is hardly anything that is more fun and exciting than a parade. Have you ever been to a parade? Perhaps it was a circus parade, or a Christmas parade, but I am sure you have all been to a parade. Sometimes a parade is part of a really big celebration. Our parade today reminds me of something that took place in the city of Jerusalem about 2,000 years ago.

Jesus and the Donkey

OBJECTS: Have a folder of pictures of a donkey.
Today is a special day for people like us, people who follow Jesus. Today is Palm Sunday. When Jesus entered the capitol city, Jerusalem, it was also kind of a scary day. A lot of powerful people did not like Jesus. They didn’t like him because the crowds were listening to the wonderful things Jesus said. They were not listening to the powerful people they used to listen to. The powerful people were so angry that they had made a secret deal with each other to kill Jesus as soon as they got the chance!
Jesus knew what they were planning to do. And that is why Jesus got a donkey. Now you might be asking yourself, “What has a secret plan to kill Jesus got to do with a donkey?” Well, I’ll tell you. In those days—2000 years ago—if a warrior or a general or a king wanted to attack a city and take over and be the new leader, he would come into that town on a war horse. Have you ever stood next to a really big horse? I mean a really BIG horse? They are huge and very powerful—and a little frightening. Behind the leader on his big war horse would come all that king’s soldiers, each one carrying weapons; swords and things like that. They were ready to fight!

Have there been times when you feel so happy and grateful you just have to sing or whistle or shout? What are some of the things that make you feel that way?
I’ll list some of my favorite things and perhaps you will share some of yours.
It makes me happy to hear children laugh. I can’t help but laugh too and it makes me want to sing with the joy of it.
Some types of beautiful music cause me to sing or hum along, and sometimes loudly!
Certain foods are delicious. I love many fruits and vegetables, but the experience of eating dark chocolate makes me want to shout out loud.
What are some of your favorite things; the things that make you so happy and grateful you want to sing or whistle or shout?
A story in the Bible teaches us that the disciples of Jesus felt this way too. As Jesus was coming down from the Mount of Olives, about to enter a village, the whole crowd of disciples “began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works which they had seen” (Luke 19:37).
