Prayers of the Faithful

Presider: God of life, you hear the grieving heartbeat of humanity and call us out of the tombs of our own making. As we seek to synchronize our hearts with the Word, we offer these prayers for the needs of the church and the world.

  • For the Church and Spiritual Attentiveness That we may resist the danger of familiarity and "thinking we know the message." May the Holy Spirit awaken us to the heartbeat of the Gospel, leading us toward a faith that expands and a grace that flows through our actions. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For Strength in the Discomfort of the Present For all those currently experiencing the "discomfort of the present"—whether through illness, financial loss, unemployment, or the death of a loved one. May they feel the presence of Christ weeping with them and find strength in a community that leans into their pain. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For Those on the Margins For our brothers and sisters relegated to the margins of society who experience social death and disparity as a way of life. May we have the courage to recognize our own privilege and work to dismantle the systems that exclude their identity and dignity. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For the Courage to "Untie and Let Go" That we may hear Christ’s command to "Untie him and let him go." Grant us the courage to touch today’s "unclean burial bands" of injustice—misogyny, racism, poverty, and war—and actively participate in the collective liberation of those bound by social sin. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For Our Local Community That we may not become desensitized to the injustice in our own institutions and systems. May we realize that our weeping is not enough, and instead, give our consent to be the vessels through which Christ comes into the world today. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.

Presider: Loving God, you called Lazarus from the grave and commanded the community to set him free. Grant us the grace to be agents of that same liberation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayers of the Faithful

Presider: Trusting in Jesus, who holds authority over the grave and promises to reconstitute our lives from brokenness to health, we confidently bring our needs and the needs of the world before our Heavenly Father.

  • For the Church and Her Mission That the Church may always boldly proclaim Jesus as the Lord of life. May her witness help to dispel the world's great fear of death and replace it with the joyful hope of the Resurrection. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For Those Bound by Fear and Brokenness For all who feel they are living in a "valley of dry bones"—those overwhelmed by brokenness, shame, decay, or deep anxieties. May they hear the authoritative voice of Jesus calling them out of their dark tombs into health and new life. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For a Return to the Sacrament of Reconciliation For all of us who have been baptized but find ourselves still knotted up and bound by sin. May this Lenten season inspire us to seek the Sacrament of Confession, so that we may hear Christ say, "Unbind them and let them go," and experience the true freedom of His forgiveness. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For Joyful Evangelization That, having experienced the freedom Christ offers, we may not keep this gift to ourselves. Give us the courage to go out into our communities, let our light shine, and share what God has done in our lives so that others may come to believe. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For the Faithful Departed For all our beloved dead. May Jesus, who wept at the tomb of His friend Lazarus and conquered death, welcome them into the eternal and glorious life of heaven. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.

Presider: God of life, you desire not that we remain in the grave, but that we be completely unbound and free. Hear these prayers we offer you today. Give us your Spirit, that we may live fully in the grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

All: Amen.

Prayers of the Faithful

Presider: God of life, you meet us in our affliction and speak words that bring forth redemption and renewal. Trusting in your mysterious and saving will, we bring our prayers before you.

  • For the Elect preparing for Baptism and for the whole Church That as we draw near to the end of our Lenten journey, those preparing for the waters of Baptism may be fully immersed in the life of God. May all the faithful be ready to renew their baptismal promises at Easter with joyful and transformed hearts. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For all who dwell in the "House of the Afflicted" For those carrying the heavy burdens of sadness, brokenness, or illness, and for all who are currently facing the reality of death. May they know the profound truth that "God helps," and invite Jesus into the very center of their present suffering. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For those experiencing spiritual desolation or waiting on God That those who feel God is delaying His help may be granted the grace to trust in His mysterious timing. May they find comfort in knowing that God can take our deepest trials and turn them into a greater glory for our ultimate salvation and healing. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For our parish community gathered at the Eucharist That as we hear Christ’s efficacious words, "This is my Body, This is my Blood," our faith in His true and living presence may deepen. May His voice command the dead places in our hearts to come to life. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.
  • For the faithful departed That, like Lazarus, they may hear the voice of the Lord calling them to "come out" of the shadows of death, and so enter into the eternal joy and light of the Resurrection. We pray to the Lord... Lord, hear our prayer.

Presider: Heavenly Father, you did not abandon your Son on the cross, nor do you abandon us in our trials. Hear these prayers and redeem our afflictions, that we may share in the resurrected life of Christ, who is Lord forever and ever. Amen.

Prayers of the Faithful

Priest or Deacon: Brothers and sisters, Jesus calls us not merely to follow the letter of the law, but to allow Him to shape our innermost character, intentions, and emotions. Let us bring our prayers to God, asking for the grace of moral maturity and the courage to speak the truth with charity.

Lector/Reader:

  1. For the Church and her leaders, that they may continually guide the faithful beyond mere external obedience to authority, encouraging a deeper moral maturity that cultivates virtue and respect for all people. We pray to the Lord.
  2. For all those in public life, especially politicians and those in media, that they may resist the temptations of the "outrage culture" which seeks to profit from anger, and instead use their platforms to renew civil culture and build trust across differences. We pray to the Lord.
  3. For our polarized society, that we may stop attributing the worst possible motives to those who disagree with us, and instead draw on the "better angels of our nature" to put charity and concern for others at the forefront of our interactions. We pray to the Lord.
  4. For this parish community, that we may take seriously Jesus’ call to shape our internal selves, cultivating such honesty and integrity that everyone knows we mean what we say and will follow through on it. We pray to the Lord.
  5. For a renewal of civil discourse, that we may recognize that words can be very hurtful, and commit ourselves to speaking truthfully and honestly, but always with great respect for others. We pray to the Lord.
  6. For ourselves as we approach the season of Lent, that we may examine our own language and discourse, being careful of what we think and say, and resisting the tendency to indulge our own outrage uncharitably. We pray to the Lord.
  7. For all those who have died, that having sought to follow God's law in this life, they may now enjoy eternal peace in His kingdom. We pray to the Lord.

Priest or Deacon: Gracious God, you desire truth in our inmost being. Hear the prayers we offer today. Help us to move beyond the letter of the law to its spirit, that our words and actions may always reflect the charity and integrity of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
