Practice vs. Preach

Jesus criticizes the religious leaders for not practicing what they preach. This theme highlights the importance of congruency between one’s words and actions in religious life.

Heavy
Burdens

The religious authorities are blamed for laying heavy burdens on others while not lifting a finger themselves. This theme centers on the unjust imposition of religious obligations without personal commitment.

Humility
over Titles

Jesus advises against using honorific titles like “Rabbi” and emphasizes the value of humility. This theme promotes a down-to-earth approach over seeking social or religious status.

BACKGROUND

The news is filled with stories of politicians and clergy living in opposition to what they teach. No matter what the faith or political system, it seems like a common occurrence these days. For instance, a prominent pastor who claimed to follow Jesus' teachings of love, humility, and service is facing accusations of embezzlement and fraud. Or a government official who called for fiscal accountability is shown to be embroiled in an expensive personal scandal involving misuse of public funds.

It was easy to see why this is so troubling. People look to their leaders for guidance and example, and such situations erodes trust and confidence. But Jesus' teaching highlighted why this kind of behavior is so wrong. People should live as they teach others to live. It is a matter of both justice and morality.

Living this way demonstrates respect for others, and shows that truth and integrity matters more than position or power. It also demonstrates faith in the potential for transformation—that we can shape our lives to embody values greater than ourselves. Jesus' words provide admonishment to take these teachings seriously, and to live up to the highest ideals we set for ourselves.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

How should people handle this situation – Should they react with anger, resentment or disappointment? Should they take some action to expose the hypocrites and spread awareness? Or should they focus on rectifying my own behavior first? In fact, how perfect am I expected to be myself?
