GOSPEL
The Prodigal Son
- A man has two sons. The younger one wants his share of the family’s money, so he leaves home.
- He spends all his money and ends up poor, hungry, and alone.
- Feeling sorry for what he has done, he decides to return home to apologize to his father.
- His father forgives him and throws a big party to celebrate his return.
- The older brother is upset, thinking it’s not fair that his brother gets a party after being irresponsible.
- The father explains that he loves both his sons and is happy to have them home.
Key Lessons for Children
- God loves us even when we make mistakes.
- We should always be open to forgiving others, just like the father forgave his son.
- It’s important to celebrate and be happy when people make good choices and return to God’s love.
- Remember to be thankful for what you have and the blessings God has given you.
Through this simplified version of the passage, children can understand the importance of forgiveness, God’s unconditional love, and the joy of repentance and reconciliation.

Kid Talk

Hey friends! Today, I want to share Sunday’s Gospel. It’s from the Bible, and it’s called the story of the Prodigal Son. It’s a little long, but I promise it’s a good one!
One day, a man had two sons. The younger son was, well I will call him Tommy, and he was a bit wild and wanted to explore the world on his own. He asked his dad for his share of the family’s money, so his dad gave it to him. Then, Tommy packed his bags and left home.

Cultivating Kindness
Be loving and kind like Jesus by caring for people, sharing, saying kind words, and welcoming and including others to make God love you with a happy heart and increase your own happiness.
Choosing Positivity
Opt to be kind and loving instead of mean and crabby to ensure God loves you with a happy heart rather than a sad heart, ultimately leading to greater personal happiness and positivity in the world.

Activities
Choose one of the following OUR SUNDAY VISITOR activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
The Gospel reading for Sunday is one of the most familiar stories in the Bible. Read with your family the story of the return of the prodigal son, Luke 15:1-3, 11-32. After the reading, list the steps of reconciliation identified in the story.
Prepare your family’s favorite meal. Before the meal, ask family members to share stories about a time when they were grateful for the gift of forgiveness that someone in your family offered them.
Talk about your experiences of forgiveness and reconciliation in the family. Discuss: What does a falling out between family members do to our home environment? What signs do we use to ask forgiveness? What signs do we use to tell one another that we forgive them?
Agree, as a family, to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation together with the Parish family during Lent. Check to see that everyone is comfortable and remembers how to participate in the sacrament. Plan a family treat after the celebration.

Lost and Found
Sermons 4 Kids
OBJECTS: “Lost Dog” flyer. You can create one on your computer or use this one.
As I walk through our neighborhood, I often see signs like this one. (Hold up the flyer advertising a lost dog.) “Lost Dog. Our little dog, Rascal, has been missing since March 1st. We love Rascal very much and we want him back. If you find Rascal, please call us at 772-5512. $25 Reward.”
When I see signs like this, I feel a touch of sadness. I can just imagine a family watching and hoping that their dog will come home. I can imagine the excitement they must feel every time the phone rings — hoping that the call will be from someone who has found their lost dog. I think of how they must worry and hope that their little dog is safe.

OBJECTS: Boomerang, if available. Or a picture of one.
A boomerang seems almost magical. It is a curved piece of wood that is thrown into the air and when it is thrown correctly the boomerang sails back to the hand of the thrower. (Show boomerang or picture of a boomerang.)
A boomerang was probably the first “heavier than air” flying object created by humans. As you can see, it has two arms or wings that are connected at an angle. Because of the way the boomerang is curved, air travels rapidly over one surface of the wing and creates lift, causing the boomerang to soar into the air.
The boomerang spins when it is thrown and it flies in a curve rather than in a straight line. That is why it comes back to the person who threw it.
Boomerangs are fun and require skill in learning how to throw them correctly. People compete in contests to see how far a boomerang can be thrown, how long it stays in the air, and how close it comes back to where it started. There is even a World Championship competition.
The outstanding thing about a boomerang is that it comes back.

Return of the Lost
Sermon Writer
OBJECTS: A well-loved (worn) doll, teddy bear, or book. (Not essential to lesson.)
Jesus often told stories when he wanted to teach a lesson. This is a difficult story to understand, but let’s try. There was a man who had two sons. The younger son asked his father to give him the property that would belong to him later (his inheritance) so the father divided his property between the two sons.
The youngest son gathered everything that he had been given, traveled to a distant land where he was careless and spent all that he had on foolish things. Then hard times came and this son did not have enough money left to buy food.
He went back home to his father and apologized for being careless and self-centered. His father was so glad to see him that he brought out a robe and sandals to dress him well and also prepared a feast to celebrate his return.
This made the other son angry because he had stayed home all this time, obeyed and worked hard for his father. This doesn’t seem fair does it?

Do you have any creative ideas or fun activities planned for the children in your parish this Sunday? We’d love to hear about them.

I plan to do a Lent craft where we open the flaps and write or draw a picture for each of the letters L E N T. I baked homemade chocolate cupcakes for a treat. I love this website. I will be using some of the resources. Thank you for ideas. Happy Laetare Sunday!
Thank you for sharing your Lenten craft idea! Your homemade chocolate cupcakes sound like a delightful treat, adding a touch of joy to this special day. — Fr. Don
