Prayer Table
Symbols
Here are a few prayer symbols that resonate with the readings that are suitable for Catholic children:
- Acts 15:1-2, 22-29 – A Chain Just like a chain is made of connected links, the early Church came together to make an important decision. This reading reminds us to work together, pray for guidance, and trust the Holy Spirit to help us.
- Revelation 21:10-14, 22-23 – A Radiant Cross – In this reading, John describes a beautiful city with a glowing cross at its center. This symbolizes that Jesus is the light that guides us, and the cross reminds us of his love and sacrifice. We can pray to follow Jesus’ example and share his light with others.
- John 14:23-29 – A Heart – Jesus tells his disciples to keep his words in their hearts, just like a treasure. The heart symbolizes love, and Jesus wants us to love him by following his teachings. This reading teaches us that we can talk to Jesus and ask for his help to live our faith every day.
- A Rosary – The rosary is a traditional Catholic prayer that helps us focus on important events in Jesus’ life, like the ones we heard in the readings. Each bead on the rosary symbolizes a prayer, and holding it while we listen to the readings can remind us to pray and grow in our faith.
A Special Helper
6th Sunday of Easter C

KID TALK—Hi friends! My name is Ana, and today I want to share with you something special from the Bible called the Gospel of John. There’s this really cool part in it, John 14:23-29, where Jesus talks to his best friends, the disciples.
In this part, Jesus tells his friends that he really, really loves them! He says that if they love him, they should do what he teaches, just like when our parents tell us to do something because they love us and want us to be safe and happy. Jesus knows that his friends might feel sad when he leaves, but he gives them a special promise. He tells them that they can have peace, which means feeling calm and happy inside, because they believe in him.

In the Gospel, Jesus tells his friends that he must go away, but he will send them a Helper. Greg shares with us who this Helper is, the Holy Spirit. He also reminds us that we have another helper who we can especially turn to in May, Our Lady. We ask for both the Holy Spirit and Our Lady to be with us when we pray. We then sing ‘Be Still’ with Sr Chiara.
In the Gospel, Jesus tells his friends that they should rejoice because he is going away. Why? Because he will send the Holy Spirit to be with them. But who is the Holy Spirit and how can his presence be better than having Jesus walking on earth with us? Sr Thérèse helps us to understand who the Holy Spirit is and why he is a perfect Helper to us. We invite the Holy Spirit into our hearts as we pray and then sing Better in His Presence with Joe.

TIPS FOR CATHOLIC CATECHISTS & PARENTS
IMPORTANT: YouTube has many videos from various Christian backgrounds. Although some are not suitable for Catholic catechesis, others can enrich children’s spiritual journey when used thoughtfully. Click on the banner below each video to view tips to help these videos more align with Catholic teachings. It’s crucial to review each video and consult the Catechism before sharing with children.
Ministry to Children (5:39)
Heavenly Hope

From a Catholic perspective, this video offers a generally positive and encouraging message about the comforting presence and role of the Holy Spirit. However, there are several theological and catechetical distinctions and potential concerns that a Catholic teacher should be aware of before presenting this video to their class, especially in a Catholic educational setting. Here are the key areas for consideration:
Church of Grace (14:14)
The Holy Spirit is Our Helper!

This video contains a heartfelt and sincere attempt to teach young viewers about the Holy Spirit as a divine helper, using relatable analogies and object lessons. From a Catholic perspective, however, there are several theological and catechetical points that need clarification or correction to ensure alignment with Catholic teaching, especially if this video is shown in a Catholic education setting. Below is an evaluation highlighting key differences and areas that a Catholic teacher should be aware of, along with citations from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) where appropriate.
Bash Children’s Sermon (1:47)
Peace

This short video offers a simple and enthusiastic message on the theme of peace, particularly drawing from Jesus’ words in John 14:27: ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled…’ While the video makes an honest attempt to help children understand Christian peace, a Catholic teacher should be aware of several points that need clarification or supplementation for it to align fully with Catholic teaching.
The Orchard Church (10:53)
Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit

This video offers a heartfelt and biblically grounded explanation of the role of the Holy Spirit as a helper for Christians, and it uses relatable analogies to communicate with children. While it successfully presents many ideas that align with Catholic teaching, there are key theological distinctions that a Catholic teacher should be aware of and address in the classroom.
Compass Bible Church (19:57)
Acts 15:1-35

This video includes engaging and creative content geared toward helping children understand the biblical message that salvation is a gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ. It centers on Ephesians 2:8–9 and Acts 15, and conveys an important scriptural truth: that we are saved by grace and not by works. While much of the video’s message is in accord with Catholic teaching, there are several significant differences or areas for clarification that a Catholic teacher should address before showing it in a Catholic classroom.

The Jerusalem Council

This video is a simplified children’s explanation of the Council of Jerusalem found in Acts 15 and seems to be produced from a broadly Evangelical or Protestant perspective. While it provides a generally accurate summary of the events in Acts 15, there are key theological differences that a Catholic teacher should address before showing this video to a class within a Catholic context.

Activities
Choose one of the following OUR SUNDAY VISITOR activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
The Holy Spirit helps us in all areas of our lives. Have a discussion about how your family can be open to the gift of the Spirit.
At mealtime, pray this prayer after you say Grace: Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Your love. Explain to family members that we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit to make family decisions and personal decisions in our lives.
Jesus said that the Holy Spirit will instruct us in everything. Have members of the family share who their favorite teachers are and were. Children could make a craft item or help make cookies for their favorite teacher. Include a note with the gift thanking the teacher for what he or she has taught.
This week spend fifteen minutes each day with Jesus in quiet prayer. Ask Jesus to fill you with the gift of the Holy Spirit.

I’ll Be Back!
OBJECTS: None needed, but you could use a book such as “We’re Moving” published by the WeWrite Corporation or “Let’s Make a Move” by Beverly Roman. You can probably find a book at your public library or call a local moving company and see if they might have a free brochure or booklet.
Has your family ever moved from one city to another? Sometimes, a move to a new city can be very difficult for a family. It can be especially hard for children. There have been many books written to help children adjust to moving to a new city.
This morning I want to tell you a story about a boy named Andrew. Andrew’s dad had a new job and the family was moving to a new city. Since it was so close to the end of the school year, it was decided that it would be better if Andrew stayed behind to finish the school year.
It was hard for Andrew to be left behind, but his father explained that they would go ahead and find a place for them to live and make sure that it was ready when it was time for him to join them. He told Andrew that there was nothing to worry about because he would be staying with some very good friends who would look after him and make sure that he had everything he needed.

Always with Us
OBJECTS: Pictures of umbrellas
Umbrellas have been around for a long time – over 4,000 years, and at first were used mainly in hot countries to shade people from the sun. Early umbrellas were made from wood and paper and some were made of feathers.
In ancient times large umbrellas were held over kings to protect them from the sun and these umbrellas were very fancy, made from silk with tassels around the edge and a flower at the top.
Later, umbrellas were oiled as a way to make them waterproof and people in colder countries used umbrellas to protect themselves from rain. And, much later, a collapsible umbrella, made with steel ribs, was invented and that is the umbrella we use today.
So, umbrellas are used to protect us from the sun, like the umbrellas we see on the beach, or they are used to protect us from rain. The thing about an umbrella is that you must think ahead and remember to take an umbrella with you or you may be surprised and get caught in a rainstorm.

Peace I Leave with You
OBJECTS: “The Swing” by Robert Louis Stevenson
“The Swing” is a poem, written a long ago by Robert Louis Stevenson and it describes the joy of swinging in a swing. It is a lovely poem; let’s read it now. (This activity is optional. See above for a link to the poem.)
Perhaps you have a swing set at your school or a swing in your own backyard. Is the swing tied to the branch of a big tree?
How wonderful to be able to swing, look up through green leaves and see the sky. Sometimes you can pump your legs and swing so high you are able to see far beyond what you can see from the ground. The best part, though, is just swinging. Going back and forth in a swing is a peaceful thing to do.
Most of us like that swinging motion. When you were a baby your parents probably cuddled and rocked you when you were fussy. A rocking movement seems to soothe us.
