Father of Black History

The story in Genesis 22 serves as a powerful allegory for the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history, showcasing their unwavering faith, resilience, and determination in the face of adversity.

Carter G. Woodson was an African American historian and author who is often referred to as the “Father of Black History.” In 1919, Woodson was attacked by a group of white men and left for dead after speaking out against racism and discrimination. Despite the near-fatal attack, Woodson survived and went on to establish the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, as well as founding Negro History Week (which later evolved into Black History Month).

Woodson’s story can be related to Genesis 22 through the lens of faith and divine intervention. In Genesis 22, Abraham’s faith and obedience to God are tested when he is asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac. Just as Abraham’s faith in God’s plan ultimately leads to a resolution where a ram is provided as a substitute sacrifice, Woodson’s story highlights how faith and resilience can lead to unexpected blessings and second chances. Despite facing violence and discrimination, Woodson’s faith allowed him to overcome adversity and continue his work in advocating for racial equality and promoting African American history.
