Activities
Choose one of the following OUR SUNDAY VISITOR activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
- Create a “Household Values” statement. Discuss the family’s priorities and values. Identify values that are most important to the household and write them down. Are the family members’ priorities in line with God’s teaching or do they need some adjusting? Keep the written statement in your home as a reminder for the family of what is really important in life.
- Reflect on how you can use your possessions, money and gifts in the service of God and neighbor. What organizations in your community are helping those in need? Get involved with this group!
- Plan a family fun time together—a whole day if possible. Go fishing, bowling, or skating; go out for pizza. Let it be a time when family members can forget their other concerns and simply enjoy each other. Talk about what each family member has learned lately or accomplished lately or done lately.
- Together with your children sort through your cupboards. Make a commitment in advance that you and your children will donate to a food bank things from the cupboard which would be appropriate. Discuss with your children that this is part of what Jesus meant when he said, “Share your gifts with others.”

A Fool and His Money
OBJECTS: “Jumbo marshmallows – 3 per child; napkins; a timer
I have something for each of you today! (Hold up the jumbo marshmallows.) That’s right, each of you are going to get a marshmallow. But do you know what’s better than one marshmallow? How about THREE? Here’s the catch. I’m going to give you one marshmallow now, then set a timer for five minutes. You’re welcome to eat your marshmallow, BUT, if you can wait the full five minutes without eating your first marshmallow, I’m going to give you TWO more marshmallows! If you eat your first marshmallow before time is up, that’s the only one you’ll get. (Pass out the marshmallows and set the timer for five minutes. When the timer goes off, give each child who did not eat their marshmallow, two more marshmallows.)
Was it easy or hard to wait for the extra marshmallows?
Would you rather have one marshmallow or three?

Sometimes Less is Best
OBJECTS: Various types of seeds and/or packets of seeds
Have you ever planted a garden or had a chance to look closely at seeds? Seeds have interesting designs. Carrots seeds are brown, very tiny and have ridges. Lettuce seeds are also brown and very small, but are more smooth. Sunflower seeds are as large as your fingernail and have a pretty striped pattern. (If you have room to plant something, try sunflowers seeds – fun!) Beet seeds have spikes that make them look rough and jagged.
(Lesson may be individualized by substituting descriptions of available seeds.)
Garden seeds come in paper packets with a colorful picture on the front showing what the seed will look like when it is grown. Directions for planting the seeds are on the back of the packet. If we plant and tend the seeds according to directions, after a few days tiny plants, called seedlings will poke through the ground. We may think that the more seedlings we have growing, the better. But, this is not the case. When too many seeds have been sown, the plants may crowd each other as they grow. If this happens none of the plants will have room to grow properly. Plants that are overcrowded must be reduced in number (thinned) so they will be able to produce tasty vegetables or beautiful flowers.
