We should not let familiarity with our loved ones lead to contempt, but instead, we should strive to understand and appreciate them deeply.

SUMMARY OF VIDEO w/ Timestamps
  • 00:00 🤔 Get to know your loved ones deeply to avoid letting familiarity breed contempt and erode your appreciation for them.
  • 01:06 🗣️ People in Jesus' hometown were unimpressed by him because they knew him too well, leading to a lack of faith and astonishment at his preaching.
  • 02:00 📖 People who shaped and formed him as a child were the first to show him love, but he felt put into a box by those who thought they knew him well.
  • 02:21 📖 A prophet speaks on behalf of God, bringing comfort to the disturbed and discomfort to the comfortable, as seen in the readings from Ezekiel and Jesus.
  • 03:09 🗣️ Don't assume you know others, listen before judging and labeling.
  • 04:14 🌍 We need to be open to conversation and understanding others in order to grow in compassion and empathy.
  • 05:36 📖 Jesus's hometown crowd closed their minds to the possibility of him being a great prophet or the Son of God, and we should not dismiss the command to love one another, especially those with labels that make them hard to love.

The readings today invite us to reflect on what it means to be a prophet, and how we can be “content with…insults…and persecutions.”

REFLECTION TRANSCRIPT

At our baptism, we were declared to be “Priest, Prophet, and King,” like the Lord Jesus into whose Body and mission we were baptized. A “prophet’ does not primarily tell the future; rather, a prophet tells the present, declaring to the people what the Word of the Lord says about our current circumstances, culture, and lifestyle. The prophet declares the next good step for God’s people to take on their constant road of repentance and growth in holiness. As the People of Life living amidst a culture of death, we are all prophets regarding the sanctity of life; we are prophets who declare that the only appropriate response to life at all stages, especially when most vulnerable, is a generous and loving “Yes.” We are prophets as we teach our children about the dignity of life; we are prophets when we share the pro-life message with friends and co-workers, with the community through letters to the local papers or over the internet.   We are prophets when we enter the voting booth, as we have the obligation to do at each election, and elect candidates who are committed to protect the unborn.

Because a prophetic stance calls us to change and to repent of sin, the prophet will often be rejected. The readings tell us that this is par for the course. It is easy to think that the rejection or persecution that accompany the prophetic role mean we need to go back to the drawing board or perhaps hire a public relations firm to refine our message. But in fact it doesn’t mean that at all. We are called to be faithful, as Mother Teresa noted, whether or not we are successful. “They shall know that a prophet has been among them.”

This is also what Paul means by being “content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints.” Sometimes this passage is related only to moral weaknesses. But he clearly also means persecutions and insults – the very things that we try too hard to avoid.

MUSIC: Lady Gaga

Do not allow rejection to derail your dreams

YouTube player
LARRY KING (2:19) – Music mogul LA Reid explains why he signed and later dropped a then-unknown Lady Gaga, and his initial attempts to ignore her success. Plus, where their relationship stands today.
LADY GAGA DROPPED

Lady Gaga Dropped From First Record Label

Lady Gaga (2007)

Lady Gaga's journey to stardom wasn't without setbacks. When Lady Gaga was first trying to make a name for herself in the music industry, she faced numerous rejections, including being dropped from her first record label. Signed to Def Jam Recordings in 2006, she was dropped just three months later.

Undeterred, Gaga relocated to Los Angeles, where she completed her debut album, The Fame, and established her creative team, Haus of Gaga. The album's release in 2008 marked the start of her meteoric rise, with multiple chart-topping singles and worldwide success.

Despite this setback, she did not let others' opinions define her and continued pursuing her passion for music. Her determination and unwavering belief in herself eventually paid off, leading to a thriving career as a world-renowned singer and actress.

OTHER FAMOUS PEOPLE INITIALLY REJECTED

Famous Rejections

Bishop Fulton Sheen, the great Preacher, was told by his college debate coach, “You are absolutely the worst speaker I ever heard.”(Mark Link S.J.).

Ernest Hemingway, the great novelist, was told by his teachers, ”Forget about writing; you don’t have enough talent for it.” Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit was rejected by seven publishers.

Richard Bach got twenty rejection slips before Jonathan Livingston Seagull was published. Richard Hooker’s humorous war novel, MASH was rejected by 21 publishers before it became a bestseller, a movie, and long-running television series.

Dr. Seuss, one of the most popular children’s authors of all time, got more than two dozen rejection slips before The Cat in the Hat made it to print.

Henry Ford: His first two automobile companies failed. That did not stop him from incorporating Ford Motor Company and being the first to apply assembly-line manufacturing to the production of affordable automobiles in the world. He not only revolutionized industrial production in the United States and Europe, he also had enormous influence over the 20th century economy and society. His combination of mass production, high wages and low prices to consumers initiated a management school known as “Fordism.” He became one of the three most famous and richest men in the world during his time. But his early businesses had failed leaving him broke five times before he founded the successful Ford Motor Company.

Bill Gates didn’t seem like a shoo-in for success after dropping out of Harvard and starting a failed first business with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen called Traf-O-Data. While this early idea didn’t work, Gates’ later work did, creating the global empire that is Microsoft.

Walt Disney was fired by a newspaper editor because, “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” After that, Disney started a number of businesses that didn’t last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. He kept plugging along, however, and eventually found a recipe for success that worked.

Oprah Winfrey: Most people know Oprah as one of the most iconic faces on TV as well as one of the richest and most successful women in the world. Oprah faced a hard road to get to that position, however, enduring a rough and often abusive childhood as well as numerous career setbacks, including being fired from her job as a television reporter because she was “unfit for TV.”

Charlie Chaplin: It’s hard to imagine film without the iconic Charlie Chaplin, but his act was initially rejected by Hollywood studio chiefs because they felt it was a little too nonsensical to ever sell.

Sidney Poitier: After his first audition, Poitier was told by the casting director, “Why don’t you stop wasting people’s time and go out and become a dishwasher or something?” Poitier vowed to show him that he could make it, going on to win an Oscar and become one of the most well-regarded actors in the business.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus faced skepticism and rejection from the people in his hometown of Nazareth, who questioned the validity of his teachings and miracles due to his humble beginnings. However, Jesus continued to spread his message of love, compassion, and faith, even in the face of adversity. His resilience and dedication to his divine purpose laid the foundation for Christianity, which has had a lasting impact on millions of people worldwide.
